This week's buying spree – the ones I didn't get
For me, going to Chapter's (or any other great book store – if only there were one in Newmarket) is a religious experience. I open the heavy wooden doors and enter the cavernous space – full of questions and searching, searching for the answers. Walking up to the shiny white computers, I nervously type in the keywords – author, title, topic – hoping against hope that they will actually have what I am looking for. Not this one, not that one. On and on it goes.
And then, success! After locating the section (they recently rearranged everything) I wander through the shelves, admiring the shiny covers, seeing in a row the state of popular discourse on politics, science, marketing… so many topics! After I find the book(s) that I originally searched for – or not – I peruse the scene to see what else catches my fancy.
After attending the Green Party of Canada Economic Summit in Toronto this weekend I had quite the list. Here are the books that didn't make the cut, though many will be on my wish list.
This is the second time in a month I've been introduced to Van Jones and this book. I will most likely end up owning and reading it but I don't think it will actually teach me much. Definitely more for reinforcement.
What can I say? It's James 'freakin' Lovelock. His work has always been game-changing. I couldn't handle any more depression right now so it will have to wait.
I loved Emotional Intelligence
Another book I just found out about this weekend, Slow Death by Rubber Duck, is especially notable because they experimented with 'everyday' chemicals on themselves. ScotchGuard a room, live in it for a couple of days and see what it does to your blood chemistry. That kind of thing. Awesome!
I was sooo tempted by this book because I recognize the name Laszlo (though I admit I may be thinking of Ernst (?) not Ervin) and because it has a very nice cover. Reading the inside made it even more tempting – Laszlo has just founded Worldshift University to teach about how our world and civilization are changing. But I already have several books on the Great Turning and 2012 and I couldn't bring myself to buy another one until I had finished at least some of them.
And, finally, because this may the most brilliant idea in the history of literature, Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters has an awesome trailer and is one of a new genre – Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter
