When Your Unconscious Mind Gets Cranky… Watch Out!
A few weeks ago I snapped the picture below to remind me that chaos and stress happen when we piss off our unconscious mind (UM). These were the very mis-matched socks that I grabbed in the dark in the middle of the night when my UM kicked me out of bed to give me a talking to.
By the way, the sock on the left was knit for me by a wonderful client that I had years ago – it's one of my faves with all the holiday colours in it. And, yes, those are my fabulous zebra print purple pyjama bottoms.
I am ALL style. 🙂
"What had I done to deserve a kick out of bed?" you may find yourself asking. That's what I asked when I woke up with the realization that I was NEVER going back to sleep if I didn't find the answer.
So I went downstairs and started the process and what I had done was pretty clear… I had pissed my UM off and it had decided that I needed an 'out behind the woodshed' kind of discussion.
I had been trying some marketing tactics that various business coaches I was listening to had recommended – like not having business cards – that weren't working. My UM asked me, fairly politely (well, not really, with a minimum of swearing then), to stop immediately.
It was also freaking out about the upcoming wedding, the trade show, my 2-day Laws of Success event, and my lack of self-care as my 40th birthday approached.
Actually, there was quite a long list, several typed pages, of items that my UM wanted me to address, y'know NOW. I dutifully wrote them all down and then when we were done my UM was content, satsified that I was going to pull my head out of my butt and actually get stuff done.
Cuz stuff needed doin' and it wasn't going to wait any longer.
I was able to go back to bed and back to sleep where I dropped immediately into a nice, deep slumber.
The next morning I woke up and was ready to get into action.
More important than being in action again was the change in my body as my UM felt calmer and more peaceful. The stress and anxiety I'd been feeling was greatly reduced and I now knew exactly where it was coming from and how to deal with it.
There is nothing worse than anxiety out of nowhere.
Luckily, the truth is that anxiety is never 'from nowhere' – it's just that most of the time we don't know how to find the answers we need to unravel the knots.
I have a great relationship with my UM. I have worked really hard to develop that relationship. And just like any other relationship, when one partner is having issues it's good to have a clear channel to work through the problem. So we did.
And now things are back to awesome.
But, and this is the important thing, if I didn't have a great relationship with my UM – and most people fall into this category – what would have happened? There are several signs that your UM is cranky and needs listening to:
- You wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep – night after night
- You have problems falling asleep because your mind is racing
- Your life is going from bad to worse with glitches, chaos and plain stupid stuff that shouldn't be happening
- You have anxiety and you don't know why
- You're slipping into, or already in, depression
- You have weird health ailments – especially skin and digestive issues
- You wake up in the morning and feel like you haven't slept a bit, and
- You're not living your life purpose and getting to your goals
If you're experiencing any of these symptoms then chances are you need to make friends with your Unconscious Mind so you can find out what's going on down there. Because, if you don't, it will just keep spiralling out of control until you DO decide to deal with it. I see it all the time with prospective clients desperate to stop the pattern.
If you don't know HOW to listen to your UM, you just won't know what to do.
It's a skill and it is learnable.
Your UM loves you and it wants you to know and heal the problems. It wants you to be healthy and happy. It's also 98% of your power and potential so you definitely want it on your side.
But it can't do anything if you won't listen to it – or don't know how to listen.
